The Benefits of Introducing Bentonite Clay Into Your Detox

Bentonite clay is made from volcanic ash and many claim it to be one of the best healing clay’s available. Loaded with beneficial vitamins and minerals such as copper, magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, and more. In total, this popular clay contains around 70 trace minerals. While all of these nutrients benefit the body, that’s not the main reason it’s considered a “healing clay.”

Based on the theory that opposites attract, bentonite clay has a strong negative charge, for this reason it acts as a magnet for positively charged toxins including bacteria, pesticides, pathogens, and healthy metals. Once bentonite clay is moistened, it immediately binds to nearby toxins. According to researchers, this is great for flushing out potentially harmful substances in the gut (AKA digestive tract). This is why it is such a popular addition to a detox program.

When consumed properly bentonite clay, and the toxins it binds to, move through the intestinal tract and eventually are eliminated from the body. Researchers say it has shown to assist in the relief of nausea, acid reflux, and diarrhea. It’s also been known to help heal  Irritable Bowel Syndrome  (IBS) and  Leaky Gut Syndrome .

Additionally, by  removing harmful toxins  and bad bacteria from your intestines, you are allowing your gut’s good bacteria to flourish, there is no shortage of information readily available as to the importance of this and new research is being released regularly.

  • Detoxifying Drink: Mix a few tablespoons of Bentonite powder with water into a paste and refrigerate over night, this allows it to thicken into a solid paste like consistency similar to a mud mask solution. Scoop a tablespoon into a shaker along with a heaped teaspoon of psyllium husks and a cup of water or a mixture of juice and water if juicing. Put lid on shaker and shake and drink immediately as the husks will begin to absorb the water and to coagulate immediately. It is recommended to drink this up to 3 times a day. The psyllium husks have enormous benefits of their own and the 2 support each other perfectly. For more information on why these are most commonly taken together read my article on the benefits of psyllium husks here.

Other uses for bentonite clay include:

  • Face Mask: Bentonite clay conditions and nourishes the skin by removing dead cells while extracting the extra oils and impurities from the surface of the skin. For a “glow” it is recommended that you apply the clay mask regularly. Make a mask from clay using enough water and clay to form a paste, along with a little lime juice. Apply to your face and neck and leave it on for about thirty minutes. You will feel your face tighten slightly as the mask dries. Rinse with warm tap water and pat dry with a clean towel. Repeat this twice a week to keep your skin feeling vital and refreshed.

  • Detox Bath: Add a 1/4 cup of Bentonite Clay to a bath for a whole body skin cleanse and to soften the skin.

  • For Baby Powder: Plain Bentonite Clay makes a very soothing baby powder for use when there is infection or redness. It can also be made into a clay paste to help speed recovery in this area.

  • Toothpaste: Mix a little clay with your toothpaste as the clay will help draw toxins out of your oral cavity. You can even mix ½ teaspoon of clay in with a 1/4 cup of water and use as a rinse to draw impurities from the whole of your oral cavity.
